Literature Text

It has been over 10 centuries since the "Earth war" started. The economies crashed, leaving all the countries in the world to be endlessly fighting. Ever since, all of the citizens of America had been forced to hide in underground tunnels like groundhogs to stay safe from bombs, never to see the light again . Many grandparents tell stories of what the sky looked like, light blue in color with white fluffy cotton lined across the sky, but now there are few that believe them. Not even the parents.

Every 3 years, all the men that are 18 and up are drafted from their underground homes to be trained into soldiers to fight in the war. They are then carried through tubes leading to the above land called "Olanies"(pronounced O-lan-ees). Only they get to seen the sky, besides the supply-men who send stuff down to the underground tunnels. But even then, they never come back home. Most of the men who fight die off, but America had become so corrupt that even the heavily injured survivors are still fighting, until they die. So still no person has seen the sky and has come back underground alive.

Due to the fact that so many people are drafted every 3 years, the above land isn't the only deathzone, so is the underground. Disease is spread throughout the underground by bugs and such, sweeping away at least 5% of the population a year. Most of those that die are cremated and spread on these underground hills, most likely not to be remembered.

Those who still believe in the sky often think about sneaking up through the Olanies and up to the above land to see it, but nobody ever has the courage anymore. America had become a authoritarian country and kills whoever tries to escape. There are rumors about someone that actually made it up there, but then again, there is no evidence that someone actually did. Everyone is still waiting for those who are smart, courageous, and sneaky enough to make it and end the Earth war. But who up to the task?

I woke up about 7 o'clock in the morning to the smell of freshly made pancakes. I groaned and slowly crept out of bed to look in the mirror. My hair was a mess. I grabbed the comb and sluggishly started brushing my shiny, but messy blond hair. "Good morning, sweetheart." said a voice behind me. I winced and turned around in a quick movement. "Mom! Don't sneak up on me like that! You know I don't like it!" I angrily spat.
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to let you know that there are pancakes on the table that I made for you." She replied in guilty tone. Mom turned around and started walking down the hallway. I sighed. "Like I couldn't smell it" I muttered under my breath.

I sat myself down at the dinning table in the middle of the small kitchen. We did have a relatively small house, but we were actually quite fortunate to afford it, due to the economy crash. I grabbed the fork and knife and hungrily dove into the pancakes without hesitation. Mom always makes the best pancakes. "Crystal! don't chew with your mouth open! It's very impolite!" Complained my mom. I gave a sly smirk. "Like this?" I purposely chewed with my mouth wide open to show the food in my mouth. "Crystal!" She yelled in irritation. I closed my mouth and swallowed. "Mom, do you have any syrup?" I asked, looking down at the syrupless and dry pancakes. I licked my lips. "I'm sorry, sweetie, but majority of the trees on the above land had been cut down for paper, so they stopped making syrup until the tree population had increased. This was announced a few days ago by the preacher." She replied.

Due to the crash, most of the electricity products had been taken away from the people many, many, many years ago, like TV, IPods, and radios. (They know what those are because nothing had improved since.) The only electricity used now was a few lighting areas and that's it. America thought that getting rid of many luxuries and such would improve the economy, but it only worsened it. (There are no hospitals, only natural medications.) But anyway, they had created preachers to spread the news around, no electricity needed.

I sighed and finished off the pancakes. I took the napkin and wiped my face. I pushed my chair out. "May I be excused?" I asked. I started walking towards the door. "Sure, but don't go far." She said, not catching the last few words.

I was quite peaceful as I went for a walk by myself. I'm used to being alone, after all, I am an only child and I am homeschooled. I never got to meet my father, like others children in this deathzone, so I never have anyone to talk with and look up to. My mom was always busy housekeeping and teaching me housing for me to actually have time with her alone. Ironic, because all we have are her and I. I brushed that thought aside, because my mom taught me to always hope for the best, that some day this war would end. I looked up and my gaze swept across the large clearing until I spotted these 2 siblings. They are lucky they have each other, I thought as I sighed inwardly. I could feel them looking at me as I continued walking.

I saw the girl smile at me. She looked friendly, a rarity around this place. Nobody was ever happy here, every once in a while someone commits suicide or homicide which now was expected. I saw her drop her sister off and then walk away in joy. Why was she so happy here? If only I was more like her, my mom always tells me to lighten up. It was lonely, and then I look at her again, now she looks bored, too. Maybe if I could just introduce myself...

Thud! I felt something hit the side of my head, Oww. I started rubbing my head as I looked down. It was a softball. I heard giggling behind me as I turned around. It was the market boys. "Sorry" said one with dark brown hair. He snorted. "I didn't see you, there" He paused for a second as I stared him down. He then let out a burst of laughter, and redhead and blonde followed. I clutched the ball in my hands and threw it at his forehead. "Real mature, Markus." I spat. He sucked his teeth at me. "Come on, Bennett and Ryan, let's go." He paused to glare at me. "You're no fun anymore." He complained. They turned around and started walking away. "Serves you right." I murmured under my breath.
